Sicoma Strength    PLANETARY COUNTERCURRENT MIXERS

Sicoma planetary countercurrent mixersThe Sicoma high speed planetary / countercurrent concrete mixer is a leader in its class;  its design has been refined over many years, from an uncompromising basic design that satisfies the perfectionist to the little touches that you expect from a truly World Class European product.  Over 8000 in use.

The planetary (or countercurrent) design has one or two mixing stars that rotate themselves while also rotating around a central point, allowing each arm to cover the whole mixer floor in a number of revolutions.  This powerful mixing action is both fast and thorough, resulting in a mixing time, after water is added, of 30 seconds or less for most types of concrete.  The result is greater throughput, giving you more concrete per hour for the same size plant, as well as better consistency and greater strength or, on the other hand, a saving on cement.  Sicoma's planetary design is superior to turbine and twin-shaft designs for production of all types of dry-cast concrete.  The reason for this is its intense mixing action, which breaks up zero-slump mix like nothing else can.

Unlike others of similar design, the paddles and gears are arranged so that every inch of the mixer floor is swept with high repeatability over 60 seconds of operation., each arm sweeping an inch or so behind its previous path and alternate arms covering the gaps so that, even with blades removed from the arms, every particle of concrete would be moved.  The consequence is that the mixing action is perfect and the blades do not have to be oversized to do it.  Additionally, discharge is fast and complete without the need for a wide scraper tail which creates dead spots in the mixer.

These actual photographs and videos show the perfect mixing action of the Sicoma planetary mixer from 3 to 60 seconds after material is added. Note that the floor is completely swept by the countercurrent action every 4 revolutions (10 seconds) and that each zone is covered at regular intervals in time.

Other important features and benefits

bulletUp to 30% greater pan volume than many others rated for the same output, ensuring that it will carry the full rated load and mix it properly.
bulletPerforms equally well on full and small partial batches - the ARMS do the mixing.  Paddles are needed for discharge only.
bulletLarge reduction gearbox and oil bath is cool running, good for the life of the mixer.  Compare with others using small commercial gear units in tightly cramped, unventilated spaces that can only withstand intermittent duty without overheating and eventual breakdown.  Sicoma has never had a gearbox failure in over 30 years of production.
bullet5 year / 10,000 hour guarantee on gearboxes.
bulletThree-armed stars have better mixing action than two-arm and last longer.
bulletPerfect countercurrent mixing action gives higher strength concrete, saves 10 - 15% cement compared with others.
bulletRubber sealed discharge doors run smoothly and eliminate  leakage of water.
bulletOptional additional discharge doors, to 4 maximum.
bulletFast and complete cleanout without requiring extra cleanout mechanisms.
bulletHydraulic door  mechanism gives powerful controllable open/close action.
bulletMotors and gears rated for occasional startup with full load, without complication of hydraulic coupling.
bulletLarge half-moon cover (smaller models) or wide segmented covers (to MP3750) giving safe, quick access for cleaning.
bulletHigh-security locking cover latch  disables startup, ensuring safety even if separate lockout switch is overlooked.
bullet15 mm Ni-Hard cast iron liner tiles and mixing blades give 10 times the wear of most other linings*.
bulletSmall, identical floor tiles are low cost and can be individually replaced.
bulletOptional Chromium Carbide cladded plates and paddles available at extra cost for extreme wear applications.
bulletOptional rubber blades/paddles for use with aggressive aggregates.
bulletElectrical wiring meets UL requirements.  Motors are CE;  UL available.
bulletBest value for money in its class.
bulletMixTron microwave moisture sensor and controller is fully compatible - perfect for all dry cast mixes.

Safe access

Safety is paramount in all Sicoma products.  The MP's half-moon cover allows almost a full 180 degree access on all models;  safer than any other, bar none.  And Sicoma's key-operated safety catch guarantees  that the motor cannot be powered with the cover open, even if the disconnect switch is closed.  Fully gasketted joints and a grilled  inspection hatch complete the package.  The optional hydraulic cover and discharge door can still be operated if power is down by using the hand lever on the hydraulic pump.

Safe access via half moon cover
Mixing blades

Ni-Hard cast iron blades are extremely hard wearing;  they are also easy to adjust and replace.  In addition, they are wear-equalized;  compared with other, symmetrical designs, MP's blades are thicker on the outside edge to exactly compensate the extra wear at these points.  Arms are identical, modular and the upper "fuse" spider arm bends or breaks away if jammed, reducing cost of repair.  Optional rubber, chromium carbide and tungsten carbide blades are available for high wear and special applications.

Hydraulic pump

Standard on all models, the hydraulic pump has a  manual actuator to open the discharge door if power is lost.
Water inlet is shown beneath pump.

Cement and aggregate inlets

Optimal introduction of cementitious ingredients can occur from either side of the mixer, as shown, so as to avoid the rotating planetary gearbox, and in the center of the access cover on some larger models.  Aggregates are introduced at the side opposite to the access cover, through a chute or the optional skip hoist.

Water entry

The semicircular water spray bar is standard on models MP1875 and larger (extra cost on smaller models).  It gives optimum distribution of water for all types of concrete; dry cast in particular.  It is important to charge the water within 15 seconds for fastest mixing action, and this system is designed for the job.  If feeding from a tank, a pump may be necessary to reach the right speed.  Note the anti-siphon U-tubes that cut off water feed instantly;  this is important when using a moisture control system.

Optional spray nozzles can be fitted to give a washout action on every batch.

Optional skip hoist

Sicoma's matching skip hoist is tailored to the mixer to guarantee "no-problem" installation.  It can be made with any height.  Simplifies loading from a low-profile batch plant, occupies less floor space and creates less dust than conveyor.

Optional discharge door covers

To allow easy inspection and access, the MP mixer is intended for use with a raised sub-floor.  When installed on a mezzanine floor, hinged door covers are available;  these are of expanded steel mesh  construction.

Optional air bag dust collector

To prevent the inrush of aggregates from forcing out a cloud of dust, the air bag inflates to take up this extra air volume.  It gradually deflates during the mixing cycle to return the dust into the mix.

High pressure washout

The standard water outlets are spaced around a 180º spreader bar, angled to give best water distribution (models MP1500 and larger).  High-pressure washout adds spray jets, angled to cover the whole mixer interior, mounted on the underside of the rotating mixing arms.  This awesome washout system is powered by a powerful high-volume pump.  The pump can be shared with a second mixer or manual spray wand.

Pulverizer attachment

Some materials tend to form balls or clump.  This powered cutting blade option, powered through the MP's hollow drive shaft, is effective in eliminating the problem.

BATCHING CONTROLS

Scale-Tron’s BATCHTRON series controllers take advantage of the MP's high mixing speed to give you more throughput per hour.  Easy to operate and set up, MP’s mixing sequence can be programmed in different ways for different formulas.

THE MP MIXING CYCLE

Although the total cycle time is dependent on the speed at which the charging takes place as well as the type of concrete being produced, typically a batch of wet cast concrete can be produced in less than 110 seconds, with dry cast, block and paver mixes taking a little longer, depending on the type of moisture/water dosing system employed.  Note that some admixtures require extra mixing time.  The diagram below assumes that the aggregates are waiting in a skip or hopper, ready for discharge.  Note the Premix time before water is added;  this is essential to proper mixing and fast mixing times.  Mixer discharge is from 20 seconds for repetitive loads to 40 seconds for full cleanout when running different colored products etc.  Contact us for specific applications.
